Samplers are a way of demonstrating one's skill at needlework and were a part of a proper young girl's life until not too long ago. They show the special stitches to make, and how to size letters and other primitive shapes of home and community life. Nease's Needlework has several examples and encourages the stitching of historical and new modern samples.
